Wild One

Green-veined White butterflies mating.

Trying to photograph butterflies when they're looking for food or a mate is frustrating, to say the least. Once they've found a mate and they are 'at it' then the task is much simpler. They become almost oblivious to cameras etc. Today was windy and these were low in the grass and to capture the image I had to resort to flash in order to freeze 'the action'. For the technically minded I underexpose the flash setting by 2 stops otherwise the image is completely burnt out. For a subject that is almost completely white I use spot-metering as well. If you are interested in the other settings.. I always use iso 400 this gives speed and a picture that is not too grainy, anything below that (for a nature shot), unless it's completely still, gives an image that is blurred.
