Chicken of the Woods
This fungus is spectacular both for its colour and form. It can grow singly or, as in this case, grow spectacular sulphurous coloured layers. It is an edible fungus and, when young, is considered a delicacy in Germany and North America.
It occurs frequently in late summer and early autumn growing on a wide variety of trees, old oaks in particular. This one was growing on the stump of a dead willow tree.
They reproduce by dropping spores from a network of honeycomb-like structures under the main body of the fungus.
