Wesels New Bridge

A shot of the new bridge, it has been about a year since it started, and when finished the single tower will be 400 feet above the river. (Base Jumpers form a queue here). The old bridge in the foreground, is the original, still in use ,which was blown up by the Wehrmacht in March '45 to delay the Allied advance, which it did for 48 hours ! In 1947 it was repaired by the Royal Engineers, with some German labour, as a Temporary structure. (60 years, not bad for a temporary job!! Wonder how long a permanent one would have lasted !?) The new one won't be finished until next year, but the road access route has still to be decided. So the opening is scheduled for late 2010.
The Crane Driver has a wonderful view from up there. Wonder how long it takes him to climb the ladder?
