The Blusher

The latin name for this is Amanita rubescens. It's a very common woodland mushroom in late summer to autumn. It gets its name because the cap is slightly rosy brown to flesh coloured (this can sometimes depend on the age of the fungus itself). It occurs in deciduous and coniferous woodland. This particular photograph is of a young specimen. When it grows it will have a broad and flattish cap on it.
I never pick mushrooms for consumption because it is so easy to make mistakes with some of the less well known edible fungi. Most fungi ident. books will, for instance, tell you that this species is poisonous BUT edible when cooked however you should discard the water that it is cooked in. You just wouldn't risk it would you?
