Sunrise at Birdoswald

Another early start was rewarded with a lovely sunrise - this is Hadrian's Wall just east of Birdoswald Roman Fort at about 6.15 this morning. At the end of this section the wall comes to an abrupt end where it meets the steep bank of the River Irthing. Originally it would have been connected to the bridge here, but the river has separated the two lengths over the years.

In the distance are the Nine Nicks of Thirlwall, the first part of the Whinsill that carries the wall eastwards for 25 miles.

Another photo from this morning can be seen here.
