Chios - the massacre of 1822 - Ottoman graves

Nestling in the neglected old fortress of Chios is a small cemetery, with Turkish graves. These date back to the dreadful massacre of 1822, when 25,000 Christian men were slaughtered and twice as many women and children were taken into slavery.

Chios suffered a terrible earthquake in 1881 which brought more destruction.

These days, it is a friendly, bustling town, so far not changed by a huge tourist industry, but visitors pass through the town on the way to the Nea Moni monastery and medieval villages.

But it is bliss to sit by the port with a local ice cream "Cronos" and the charming locals.
