I fought the law and the law won....
Blip world, this is Shaun, Secretary of Radcliffe Angling Society.
He's not a criminal, as the title suggests, but in this shot he's checking the paperwork for Sam The Painless Pole's CRB check.
CRB? CriminaL Records Bureau. Any one who works with children has to be CRB checked. Sam was a teacher for 30 years and has been an angling coach for about 5 years, but it's renewal time on his CRB, so he has to re-apply and everything has to be re-presented and checked.
On the table are three forms from the CRB to be completed, Sam's British Passport, Palestinian Birth Certificate and Gas Bill!
Shaun has to sign that he has checked all these items against all the information Sam has filled in on the CRB form, and that Sam is who he says he is, was born when he says he was and lives where he says he does! Of course when it's Shaun's turn to renew his CRB, Sam will have to do the same for him!
The form will probably come back as rejected because the rules on completeing it are myriad and petty.
It has to be completed in black ink, not blue, not fibre tip!
Signatures must fit inside a small box, one micro millimetre of ink even touching the lines of the box = rejection.
There are others too numerous to mention.
But the most likely reason is Sam's birth certificate. His parent's are Polish, in 1945 they were liberated and sent to what was then Palestine (now Israel) and Sam was born in Jerusalem in 1947 (his sister was born in Bethlehem). His parents then moved to the UK, where as an adult Sam applied for a British passport. As Palestine no longer exists as a seperate country Sam is Stateless and as his birth cert is written in Hebrew, Arabic and English, but stamped Palestine it causes untold trouble with Government bodies who don't appear to know any world history!
It'll all be sorted in the end and Sam will once again be able to officially work with children (as an unpaid volunteer).
Sam says "Whoopi-do!" Shaun says "Grrrr!!!!" and the law wins again.
