A favourite spot locally is Grey Point Fort. I've brought all the kids here at various times as toddlers. It's a coastal artillery fort built in 1904 at the mouth of Belfast Lough. It saw service of a kind in both World Wars and was the Operational HQ for all NI coastal defences.
Following the disbandment of the coastal artillery the fort was closed on 3 Jan 1957 and was eventually donated to Crawfordsburn Country Park in 1971. It was restored and opened to the public in 1987 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Territorial Army, who manned the battery in it's later years.
It's a great spot on a nice day for a picnic as there are tables etc and it's very close to the North Down coastal walk.
