Cross border lunch
I woke with my horrible bad back again, so had to indulge in the painkillers that make me feel all wobbly just to get out of bed. After a few days of very still weather, we were forecast 60kph winds today so decided to pop to Spain for lunch. We drove to Empuries, which has some very impressive Greek and Roman remains, and is very near the totally delightful Sant Marti, where we were able to explore the old village, marvel at the jumble of kite surfers a few miles up the coast, and collapse onto a very comfortable and friendly restaurant terrace for tapas and a welcome bottle of rose (the painkillers were wearing off by then).
The restaurant was just opposite the village church (in the photo) and the kids had a grand time playing 'hidey-go-go' with some local kids (who seemed to pick up the rules pretty quickly) while we relaxed in the sun.
Instead of enduring the hot 2km walk back around to the main entrance of the ancient ruins, Mr B found an unlocked gate into the back of the site, so we snuck in* to explore. Very impressive site, and they've obviously only begun to excavate. The ruins date back to 600BC, and are all the more dramatic for their backdrop of a blue blue sea fringed with pine trees.
*It would have been a bit more unobtrusive if we hadn't been followed by all the other folk walking along the coastal path at that point.
After a tactical application of sunscreen, we repaired to the beach. The sea was a bit too frisky for any serious swimming, but the kids managed to get soaked and have fun. Pizza on the way home with a free kinder egg each from the nice pizza man made it a pretty much perfect day for the kids.
Off now to see if there're any soft-hearted men on the terrace who'll give me a glass of red and massage my sore back.
EDIT: re the sky: I know, I know. The polariser was not needed today....
