FETE DE COURGE

In a tiny town near Lafage, Cahuzac, each year they have a fete de courge or squash festival. They have hundreds of varieties of squash laid out on tables in a hige barn-like structure. You can eat lunch in the big barn, then look at and buy as many as you can carry. The were 2.5 euros per kilo.

I loved the color and texture of the ones in the photo. I asked a friend what the French word for the bumps was. She said "pustules". That made them a little less attractive... I also just checked the spelling of "courge", and in addition to squash, it also means imbecile or dimwit. I rather wished I hadn't checked...
