I am training to be a breast feeding helper through the Breast Feeding Network. Today we looked at marketing and how companies push formula milk to those most vunerable in society. The WHO has a code of conduct to which the UK has only partially signed up to (here it is against the law to promote infant formula up to 6months) hence the invention of follow on formula by the big companies to get round the law. Im not against bottle feeding per se, but it is scary to think there is less quality control for formula that we give our babies than there is for the food we eat ourselves. Plus the fact that in places like India and the Philippines big companies push formula as being better than breast milk to a population that can hardly afford to feed themselves let alone spend hard earned money on formula when breast milk is free, is an outrage. Particularly as the Philippines the Government has fully signed up to The WHO code of Conduct.
Sorry rant over for today, had to get it out sme how.
