First Macro Lens Attempt : Aster

I spent some time in the garden trying out my new macro lens. Varying results - I need to get used to the narrow depth of field. I was using my monopod and had the lens set to use IS. Any advice welcome.

I like this one. Can anyone tell me what these flowers are called? I suspect they are wild.
