A Good Day For Ginger Rodents!

The red squirrel population at Fromby Point fell drastically in 2008 due to squirrel pox virus and by Spring 2009 the numbers there were thought to be less than 20. By Autumn 2009 they had recovered a little and although there are no figures yet for this year it seems that their numbers have increased again. More good news is that the last known case of squirrel pox virus at Formby was in December 2008.

We had certainly not seen any red squirrels on our visits over the last couple of years but today high up in the overhead canopy of the pine trees we were lucky enough to spot squirrels again. The photographs are not very good as I couldn't cope with the many branches, the light of the sky above and the darting movements of the squirrels when they broke cover. But it was a joy to stand and watch them.

Some more poor photos of red squirrels high in the trees.
