Amazing Feats

Today's walk took in two fantastic engineering feats. The railway viaduct at Chirk built by the Scottish engineer, Henry Robertson in 1858 and the magnificent Pontcysyllte aquaduct.

The aquaduct carries the canal across the River Dee and is 126 feet high. It stands on 18 pillars and is more than 1000 feet long. The canal is fed from the River Dee at Horseshoe Falls just outside Llangollen. The 11 mile stretch from the Horseshoe Falls to Glendrid Bridge near Chirk is a World Heritage Site.
