Thistle Down

Stamps

Many years ago,
A two-cent letter came,
Or sometimes a penny-postcard,
Bearing well...your name.

Then it changed...it did,
It took a three-cent stamp.
We thought it was so dreadful,
And the letter laid by the lamp.

A few years went on past,
"My Goodness Sakes Alive!"
A nickel to send a letter,
The cents were up to five.

And then before We knew it,
Here came our terrible fate.
The Postman brought a letter,
All dressed up in eight.

Merciful, mer-ciful madness,
10 cents, 13 cents, 15 cents.
T'is the worst we've ever seen.
Hush...a letter came just yesterday,
And it was marked...eighteen.
