Get myself connected
How many times had this happened since he'd been here? Adam couldn't say for sure, but enough that he felt he could set the machinery up himself - and probably faster than Billy-no-brains, who was all thick fingers and clumsy thumbs.
It was like watching a carthorse try to thread a needle.
Eventually though, he recognised the sequence of lights that meant the machine was ready. Hewson, along with the man they called Major and the others in the room put on their ear defenders - and the major flicked the switch that turned on the equipment.
As before, Adam heard the sound - part whine, part whisper - that told him the machine was doing its thing. It was a sound on the edge of hearing, both tantalising and irritating, he thought.
Although so far, everything they'd tried had had no effect, would this time be different? Adam doubted it, but couldn't have any real confidence about this feeling. And he couldn't help wondering, if this did change him ... would he know?
Part Three begins here.
