Thistle Down

By Ethel

Sheep-Herd

We had a sheep-herd...once,
Not many...but a bunch.
They gave me experience,
And in thoughts now...I munch.

For I was a child...then,
I followed them over the hills.
And brought them home safely,
Away from wolves...that kill.

I held them in my arms,
For they were tame.
I cleansed their hooves,
When they were lame.

I parted the wool on their backs,
And pushed with a pull.
Surveyed the pounds they grew,
And the texture of their wool.

I was a shepherd...then,
I loved each one the same.
Like Jesus Christ...who knew his flock,
I knew them...by name.
