Change of plan
Hewson seemed frozen to the spot. With a great effort, he shook his head.
"No," he said. "I can't allow that." Although he was struggling to stop himself trembling, he managed to look the taller man in the eye.
"It's not worth that. Nothing is worth that. I'm sorry, but this has all gone far enough," he said, the note of indignation rising in his voice.
The Major appeared to reflect for a moment.
"You're right, of course," he said after a moment. "What was I thinking of? Please excuse me - military training, I'm afraid. Forget I said anything. But we have to do something about the situation, don't we."
Again, he appeared to be thinking.
"Got it!" he said. "I know what we need to do. Come on." With that, he led the way to the door of the room where Adam was being held.
"Right-oh," he said. "Once we're inside, let me do the talking, OK?" Hewson nodded, curious as to what the new plan was, but feeling relieved that there was one.
"After you, old son," said the Major, unlocking the door. As Hewson stepped forward, we felt the other man's hands push him in the back and he went hurtling though the doorway.
