The student voice

Today we were amongst many universities having a student demonstration as part of the national day of protest about fees. Or was it about higher education cuts? Or staff cuts? Even the students didn't seem to know, or were protesting about them all.

Despite a large security presence, they managed to get into our building and 'occupy' the Rotunda, which is the beautiful space above the main reception desk, complete with tent, sleeping bags, food and, of course, juggling balls. They then clambered out on to the balcony, where they stayed till 5pm, at which time, the police informed them, anyone remaining would be charged with trespass. At 5pm they obediently left with police escort.

The highlight of the day for me was when I realised that their chants - They. Say. Cut. Backs. We. Say. Fight. Back. were in perfect time with the bongs from our clock tower. Sadly they didn't capitalise on this, their loss I feel.
