Thistle Down

By Ethel

Old & New

It fills my heart with sadness,
And it makes me sort of blue.
When the old year has been finished,
And we step beside the new.

It's like the closing of the gates,
When a crowd is passing through.
When our year is almost ended,
And we start out with the new.

It's like an old friend's passing,
That to us is tried and true.
When the wisdom of experience,
Is passed on to the new.

It's a road on which we travel,
And the by-ways that are few.
And a dead-end looms before us,
To the free-way of the new.
