St Fillan's Cave
Today's the day ...................... to go to Fife
Went to the lovely little harbour town of Pittenweem in Fife today with our friends John and Roma. We collected the magnificent key to open this gate and went in to see St Fillan's Cave.
The cave has traditionally been associated with St Fillan who was thought to have engaged with pilgrims who passed along the various routes which lead towards St Andrews. Celtic monks travelled here from Ireland and maybe from other parts of the continent. Evidence from the Isle of May and from a local graveyard suggests that pilgrims from Spain (Santiago di Compostella) may also have lived and died in the locality.
The gate was designed by Miles Auchinleck of Crail and the cave was refurbished and opened to visitors in October 2000.
PS Many thanks for your wonderful response to yesterday's blip! All tips and recommendations have been passed on to my mother who is overwhelmed to be the centre of so much attention!!
