Seeing is Believing

A photo like this (but on a bright clear day with no fog) appeared on the front page of a national newspaper a few weeks ago when the snowy weather was beginning to make national headline news. I wondered where the shot had been taken from as I didn't quite believe the town / castle could be framed against hills that appeared so close but in fact are over 15 miles away.

Anyway, I'd decided to hunt for the location when the weather improved in Spring.

Until today that is. The local newspaper now also featured the same photo so, with a friend, we set off to try to find the location. We did and apart from the original photo masking the lower part of this blip photo by a hedge, this is almost exactly the spot.

Curiosity satisfied and humble pie eaten. Through a 300mm lens the hills do indeed look as though they are very close and immediately behind the town. I'll revisit the spot in better weather (ie not foggy as it was today) and take a few more photos.
