Last One Standing

Another photo from Glenrothes - this time Crombies the bookies. In the very late 1960's this shop was part of a small shopping mall. With the creation of the main shopping mall for the town nearby, most of the shops were converted into offices to become the town's police station in the early 1970's, leaving just the bookies and a vets practice from the original tenants. A few years later, the police outgrew the premises and moved to a new building nearby, leaving the offices to be used by the social work department for many years. By the late 1980's the whole complex was to be demolished for redevelopment. The social work department got new offices built, and the vets got new modern premises built also. Only Crombies refused to move, so the building was demolished around them, leaving them the last one standing. You can just see the corner of the multi storey car park in the top right of the photo which was built as close to Crombies as was possible. Twenty years later, the bookies is still there!
