Black Beauty
Megadromus. There are several beetles of this species native to New Zealand, but I don't know which one this is. I can't find a match between ones that look like this and ones found in my area.
I frequently disturb these beetles when I am gardening. They like dark places, and they quickly burrow into soil or disappear among fallen leaves. They are shiny black with a wonderful iridescent sheen. I'm not skilled enough to get the detail in the black face, but it is such an ugly face that some of you would probably prefer it this way. It was about 3cm long.
Best seen large.
Today was darkly overcast, calm and pleasantly cool after yesterday's sizzler.
