Theatre In Courtyard

Sumang Lila (Sumang = Courtyard; Lila = Drama or play, in Manipuri one of the numerous Indian languages) is one unique and popular social play which is used to be played outdoors in the courtyard! It's been in vogue since the early part of 20th century. The playground is surrounded on all (four) sides by the audience earmarking a little path for the artists to come in and out! There are only two chairs and a side-table facing the entrance.

Like in the Shakespearean times, all female parts are taken by males! There is no prompt, but direct dialogue which shouldn't be forgotten amidst the hot audience surrounding on all sides.

Most of the themes of the plays are based on current social issues. There are plot, story, humour, continuity, laughter, romance, felony, hatred, suspense, tears, climax - required for either a comedy or tragedy. All are directed towards making a better society by illustrating that truth and goodness triumphs in the long run against all evils!

In the modern times, the playground has been upgraded to a square-ring type stage. The musical instruments have also been upgraded from the simple drum and cymbal to the electric drums, guitar, violin, etc. with both male and female playback singing in accordance with the mood.

And the playback singer of the female voice is also a man!!!
