Water flowing over the Kaitoke weir, Hutt River
I'm working on an assignment of photographs on utilities: electricity, water, telecommunications. After spending several days on electricity, today I looked at water. I travelled to the upper Hutt River, where a water treatment plant and weir are located. These facilities are key elements of Wellington's water supply.
This image shows water flowing over the Kaitoke weir, a small dam in a steep and forested valley upstream from the Pakuratahi forks. Here, some water is diverted into a 700 metre tunnel and flows to the Kaitoke water treatment plant. Once treated, the water then enters the region's water supply system.
