Entering the old Mangaroa railway tunnel, Rimutaka

This morning we went for a walk in the Tunnel Gully area. The photo shows my mother and my son entering the Mangaroa tunnel. This 220 metre long tunnel was built in 1875. It is one of several on the old Rimutaka railway, which traversed the rugged hill country between the upper Hutt Valley and the Wairarapa plains.
