Dave's Views

Hill Paul and Stroud Station

Another night view of the town, this time taken on my way to a council meeting. I'd been thinking about taking a view of the Hill Paul building for a while and had just got into position but not had time to assemble the tripod when a train pulled in. Shot a couple of frames hand held (and breath held) with the blurred train in the foreground. I liked these better than the later (sharper) shots of the building without the train. The trains only come along every hour so I couldn't wait around for the next one. Might try again sometime soon but check the train timetable first.

Hill Paul

Built in 1898 for Williamson Tratt & Co, for a clothing business, which was taken over in 1902 by Hill Paul & Co. The business continued successfully, employing 110 people in 1971. Production finished in 1989 and the building was purchased by a developer, whose intention was to build flats. The building became unsafe and demolition looked likely. In response, the Hill Paul Regeneration group was formed, and Stroud people barricaded the building to stop demolishers moving in. Once again Stroudies were successful in winning a change of heart. It's since been developed and turned into apartments. Lit up at night it is a one of the major local landmarks.
