A tired old school

The theme of this week's challenge is 'tired' and it being a filthy wet day several of the animals obliged by adopting suitably lethargic poses.

However I decided instead to blip this picture of Fishguard's worn-out junior school: shabby, dilapidated and leaky, the banner across the front nevertheless announces it is 'celebrating' its centenary this year - which will also be its last. A new school is being built and this one, with its traditional separate entrances marked GIRLS and BOYS, will be demolished before the year is out.

It's always sad to see an old landmark disappear and in this case many local people must have received their early education here. The building also acts as a blood donation clinic every 6 months and as a polling station on election days.

And what will take its place? Well, wouldn't you know? A 15,000 square foot supermarket is on the drawing board and will be thrown up in weeks when the site becomes available. Tesco - for it is they - were so eager to get a hold on this small town (despite already having stores but 15 miles in three directions) that they bribed the council with a promise to fund a new school in exchange for the site of the old one. And now rumour has it they have renegued on the deal! But no matter - we will soon have our own huge supermarket to complete the job of wiping out the already blighted small traders in the town.

[Edit: this image turned out far better than I anticipated given the conditions, I was quite delighted with it (something to do with the angle I guess.) The school is in the middle of the town, just set back from the street on rising ground but has little to draw the eye save the unusual colour which I have accentuated with a tiny bit of saturation.]
