A Suburban Mum's Diary

Scotland meets Texas

I have to say the weekend and following days have been eventful to say the least. Thank you to my dear sweet Scottish friends here - thank you for the bed guys! There really cannot be much stranger than 500 odd Scots or Scots-related folk in one room in a hotel in Houston, in fact, could there possibly have been more Scots in that Ballroom than in Scotland itself on Saturday evening? There are many who call themselves Scottish, or who feel free to wear the kilt - that really is kilt NOT skirt - for those of you around us (Americans - you are not alone on this!) who really love to call it that. I have allowed my LH to be an Honorary Scot given he lived most of his life in Bonnie Scotland albeit he is born and bred English! It helps that he suits the kilt - or the kilt suits him - an ongoing argument in our home. REALLY?! Does it matter for F#$%^ sake?! We paid homage to Rabbie of course, that was what it was all about, although he'd turn in his grave if he could have seen how small the Haggis on the large silver platter really was :-) We were all in our finery - my life does not have so many Black Tie events in it these days - not like the good old days and hell knows I wish I'd kept those old ball-gowns! Well, on another note, LH has been persuaded by LD to take her to a Father and Daughter Masquerade Ball put on by the local Girl Scouts Unit which LD is part of...he dodged last year (ok he couldn't go) and the pressure is on this time around. Tomorrow a crowd of girlies are attending a jewelry party starting at 10:00am. So, having watched tonight's American Idol and being in awe of the young man standing by his fiance (with tears rolling down my face), I am about to retire for the evening well and truly exhausted. Today my father would have been 83 years of age. He liked Robert Burns and appreciated his poetry. Their birthday was one day apart. God Bless Dad. I miss you and although it has become a little easier, you are not forgotten and are in our hearts for evermore. One last thing, had fun tonight planning our local Royal Wedding Reception. After all, Wills and Kate do deserve a good send-off. Anyone for champagne?!
