Calgary - the art and science

Calgary is such a city of contrasts. This image captures some of them. The oil and gas industry dominates and the downtown is being transformed by the building of many new and beautiful buildings, standing monuments to the money being made deploying increasingly sophisticated methods to extract oil from the sub surface.

At the same time this city has embarked on a serious journey to support the arts. Saw the world premier of the opera The Inventor by John Murrell and Bramwell Tovey last night at the newly renovated Jubilee Auditorium. It played to a full house. The building in this blip was restored to house the Centre for the Performing Arts. Music, as one of the arts, is celebrated by this wonderful image engraved over one of the doorways.

I love the way art and science stand together in this image. A true picture of Calgary today. Home to Vancouver tomorrow. ;-)
