Buchanan Castle
This is Buchanan Castle in Drymen.
The last Laird of Buchanan died in 1681 and the house and estate were bought by the 3rd Duke of Montrose. The original structure burnt down in 1852 and this building was built as a replacement by the 4th Duke of Montrose in 1854. It was sold in 1925 and was used as a hospital during the second World War. Rudolph Hess was a patient here. The roof was removed after the war to avoid paying taxes and the building fell into disrepair.
(Another history lesson!)
Not sure I have picked the best photo today. I had some that I liked but you could only see part of the building whereas this gives an idea of the overall size. Will probably return again at a different time of year.
