Starlings in the mist

Very misty day today - only just starting to lift a little. Spotted this murmuration of Starlings (how amazing is that as a collective noun?! Thanks google - though one dissenting site suggested it is a 'scourge'. No thanks - I'll stick with 'murmuration') on the spire of a derelict church just down the road on my way to work. Not a very exciting photo, sorry - though you can just about see some of the decorative stonework.

For the first time in 5 years teaching at the University, one of my students cried in class. Not because I'm mean - in fact, I had a lump in my throat too! We were discussing the Civil Rights Movement, doing a case study on the Freedom Summer, Mississippi 1964. We watched a YouTube documentary about the Freedom Summer - first part and second part up to 2:35. I must confess my preparation wasn't as thorough as usual, and I hadn't watched these in advance - I wish I had, just to be prepared for watching an 8 year-old boy at his murdered brother's memorial service, singing 'We shall overcome' with all his strength.... I just had no idea how to follow that and get the discussion started - and I'm only surprised more people weren't as affected by it as that one student was.
