True Romance
On St Valentine's day, my partner Anthony and I both started work at 6 in the morning. We'd both forgotten the date and had bought cards but not yet written in them. So no Happy Valentine's Day as we parted.
But when we realised later in the day, neither of us felt the need to get in touch and apologise because as always we had told each other on parting that we loved each other and wished the other a good day. Not out of routine but because we meant it.
Yesterday I had a minor operation, I was a little nervous of my first anaesthetic but I could tell that Anthony was more worried on my behalf. He bought me a magazine to read - but not just any magazine, a Wildlife one with advice on photography because it combined two of my interests. He bought a spare overnight bag in case I'd forgotten anything. He looked after my valuables while I was in theatre and he made sure he was there when I came out.
He'd arranged for me to have company today if I wanted any while he was at work and he hugged me all night, but not too tight.
When we got back to the house after I was discharged he gave me these sweets. Not because of the date on the calender or even because they're my favourites - but because he knew they'd make me smile.
Thats true romance and that's why I'll leave St Valentine's Day to the teenagers.
