Invocation

he stands alone
head bowed -
is it an invocation
a chant
a prayer?
or is he just reading
and calling
all his attention
to bear
on the written word?
his stillness affects me
like balm
suffusing me
with numinous calm
even if
prayers go unheard

Antony Gormley's 'Sound II' in the crypt of Winchester Cathedral.
Often his feet are in water, fed by springs, but not today, although the patterns on the floor left by damp are quite interesting.
One of Gormley's finest works IMHO.
