The Mersey Wave
Another trip out to photograph something I have seen before loads of times but not gotten around to getting a photograph of. I took a lot of shots from various angles and got some nice ones from the bridge with car trials, but this odd angled one was the one I decided I liked best - a little quirky
The Mersey Wave was specifically designed to be viewed from a moving car. Spanning the dual carriageway, Speke Boulevard, which runs thought the south of the city in Speke-Garston (just opposite the Jaguar factory), the Mersey Wave is 200 ft long and 100ft high sculpture - the same size as seven double-decker buses and 30 ft taller than the famous Angel of the North at Gateshead. At night, its blue lights are said to be visible up to a mile away.
Originally installed in November 2003, it had to be taken down in early 2004 after it was discovered that in certain wind conditions the fins moved in a way that was not anticipated. After a period of redesign it was reinstalled in June 2005. It was designed by internationally-acclaimed Czech-born lighting artist Peter Fink in collaboration with urban designer Igor Marko.
