The First Day of Spring

In the past few days, it seems like Messers Winter and Spring have been having a rather rough game of tug'o'war. With the cold winds, grey skies and drizzle at the start of the week, it seemed that Winter was winning, keeping his ice cold grip on the rope while Spring slipped on the frozen ground, struggling to get a foothold.

Today, though, things seem to have changed. A number of things around me suggested that Spring might be getting the upper hand.
*One, after lunch time, the sun decided to make an appearance for the whole afternoon, in a bright blue sky only briefly interrupted by white clouds.
*I was able to wander around the streets of the city wearing only a shirt and a thin v-neck without feeling the cold.
*There were purple, yellow and white crocus heads standing tall everywhere grass was touched by sun.
*There were people sunning themselves on the grass of George Square gardens [and you know moany students don't come out in the cold].
*I saw the first barbecue on the Meadows on my journey back for dinner. I can't believe that in a few months, there will be hundreds of smoking foil grills dotted over the grass, interspersed by guitars, abandoned shoes and orange Saisnbury bags.
*This was in my head all day.

So I thought I would give spring that little extra push, the small sustenance it might need for the last pull: Home made lemon drizzle cupcakes, topped with home made lemon buttercream frosting, each adorned with home made marshmallow fondant fashioned into daffodil heads. When the daffs appear, Spring will have won.
