Not a native New Yorker, and perhaps never will be, though my presence here now belatedly fulfills the desires of an impressionable 17-year-old who found the east coast a wildly stimulating place after the sleepy suburbs of Los Angeles, way back when.
I have a great curiosity about cultural difference and other cultures, another reason to be in NYC when you can't be constantly travelling. In a strange way, the camera lets me travel, when I am brave enough to let it.
Boring facts: I study country risk in the finance sector, rather badly. If I'm lucky I hope to work more intensively with smaller microfinance organizations trying to help them figure out how to grow without blowing up (I work with 3 great women in a volunteer organization and we've had the great fortune to go to Ghana, Liberia, and Kenya so far. Haiti too. Fingers crossed for more).
I wish I had figured out a way to document the vast social and economic changes that China has undergone, as this may be the major economic and geopolitical event of my lifetime. Perhaps there's still time.
Fairdrookit introduced my daughter and I've found this to be a really inviting way to return to photography and explore, and also engage with some very talented people and some terrific wits (you know who you are!).
Only complaint is I do a lot less reading, and really, I have a finite time to finish all those classics. Also, the dog is ignored.
