Ground Zero

Today's the day .................... to go downtown

Went downtown today - by bus this time - right to the end so that we were looking out across the Hudson River to the statue of Liberty. We went to see Ground Zero - the name given to the area where the twin towers of the World Trade Centre were destroyed on the 11th September 2001. We were taken on a tour around what is now a massive building site by two volunteers from the Centre there.

It was a very moving experience to hear them talk about what had happened on that terrible day. Ann's husband was one of the many firemen who had lost their lives trying to help people out of the buildings. Frank's sister had been working on the 98th floor of one of the towers when the plane crashed into the floors below.

It will be ten years this September since it happened. You can see that things are beginning to take shape and eventually there will be new buildings and a museum. The events of 9/11 will never be forgotten .................
