Globe artichoke

Artichoke plants are absolutely huge and extremely prickly so they don't make the ideal garden plant.

I wouldn't really have chosen to grow them but someone gave me a few and it really is quite a spectacular plant. The leaves are like silver velvet, just drawing you in to touch them, and then.... ow! The spikes really are lethal.
