Our Lady of Walsingham

Still wandering in East Anglia and stopped by Walsingham. According to the legend Mary appeared to a Saxon noblewoman in 1061. She took her on a journey to Nazareth and told her to recreate the house in Nazareth where the angel came to break the news to Mary.

This became a major centre of pilgrimage in the middle ages - and all the kings of England made numerous visits. Of course, Henry VIII dissolved the monastery that had been founded to care for the shrine. It wasn't until the 1930's that the shrine was properly re-established.

It seems very busy with coachloads of pilgrims at a time. The Anglican version in the village does a very nice soup of the day with crusty bread!
