Death watch

The tiny holes in this wood are of course woodworm. Woodworm are not really worms but the larvae of several species of beetle, one of which is the Death Watch beetle. This is my favourite one because of its cool name.

The name comes from the beetles way of attracting a mate by tapping on the wood on which they live. Because the main reason you would be up all night listening to this sound was when watching over a dead body or a dying person till dawn, the sound came to be associated with this death watch, hence Death Watch Beetle.
