Roadway Yard
Every morning our commuter train races past the Roadway Freight Yard in Irving. I often look at how neatly the hitches are lined up. Almost military style. Sometimes I can almost see them as little tanks lined up for battle. This seems like a lot of work, but I am not a very organized person. You who have been following my blips may remember the shot of my desk.
When I was a child, I had hopes of being a truck driver. The call of the open road inspired me to collect maps. I was not that interested in where the road travelled or what the scenery looked like. My desire was to drive roads. I would take my map and follow a road until its end. Then where ever it ended, I would follow the road that picked up where the other left off. Following until I ended up at an ocean. I guess in some ways that is what I did much of my life. Instead of trucks, I flew cargo airplanes for the Air Force. I did have my favorite places to go, but mostly I just wanted to go.
When I retire, I still have a desire to hit the road for a year. Where I would go would not be pure chance. Taking I-35 north out of Dallas and running it to its end would be ideal. Then wandering from road to road finding interesting and crazy things to see and blip would be my idea of a great retirement.
