Making a Memory
Today was the first day I wore Tim's dog tag. It was totally precious. And not to sound like a weird-o, it smelled like him, too; which just added to how adorable it was.
Scent is an interesting sense. They say it is the most memory driven sense we have. Which, if you think about it, does seem true. I mean I was just cruising along in my car the other day and for some reason whenever I only "vent" the sunroof, it still smells like it did the first day I drove it...three years ago.
Or the scent of rain right before the storm. People used to tell me I couldn't smell it coming, but there is a distinct smell let off by the build up of moisture in the air that gives it away. I'm even better than Karen in Mean Girls. "There is a 30% chance that it's already raining." (If you haven't seen the movie: 1. shame on you, and 2. go watch it...NOW)
Or how about the scent of the first crisp Spring day. It comes out of no where right? We all know when Spring is coming. Even the groundhogs know. But for some reason, it always catches us off guard when you walk out one day and the sharp yet sweet smell of life fills the air. They say you can't smell sunshine, but on days like this, it has never been as potent.
It is truly amazing what scent carries with it. Some carry tastes even. But each scent carries a memory with it that determines our attitude toward that scent. Imagine if this is how everything in life worked. From memory, we could just sense whether or not something was right or good. But I guess that would take the mystery out of life. And of course the adventure, too.
