Boathouse, Beach and Gerry Oaks
A glorious day - I went out late afternoon in the dory to try to catch the baby seals - wanted to blip that noisy one, - but think too much activity and too high a tide caused them to not be on their rocks. Another day. So.... decided this was a good view of the beach and the boathouse and the Gerry Oaks. at the end of the bay. A lot to mention. 1st: the tree outlined against that fabulous blue sky and also to the left in a small stand in front of firs, is a Gerry Oak. This is the only place in Canada(the west coast) where these grow and there is a considerable conservancy effort to protect them from becoming an endangered species. The acorns were eaten by the Salish and the bark was used in medicines. 2nd: the beach- this is a midden used by the Coast Salish Natives probably for a summer camp. The beach is all shells and many artifacts have been found right here-(see the little inset for 2 - little "beads" -stones with a hole in the middle ranging from 1/2" to over an inch. Too small for weights. Not sure what they are. Any ideas? And a few arrowheads have been found - I can't guarantee this one - it's the best I have, but I've seen more likely ones.) Our neighbor across the bay built the boathouse, and that is his flagpole with The Union Jack (his family is from the UK) the B.C flag and the American (for us) as well as his yacht club flag. It's a great place in summer for the kids to swim. and can't you just see those Indian canoes pulled up on the beach?
