Whats the Story....?
Bad Schonborn is a new town which has built up quickly (and in a very ordered German style) around the thermal spring which was discovered in the 70?s.
The Thermal pools use natural salty spring water, which comes from the ground at 45 degrees, and is cooled to 34 degrees for the pools. There are 5 pools in the complex, 1 of them seems to have been set aside for the senior, or as Jacca puts it the senile.
Wasser Gymnastics occurs at regular times in each of the pools. A nubile young instructor demonstrates various arms and/or legs flapping motions poolside, whilst you attempt to replicate them in the water.
In the senile senior pool, the wasser gymnastics is much gentler, it appears to consist mainly of swaying. I think its purpose is to check that all the people currently in the pool are still alive. I guess judging by the very high average age, that the rate of attrition is quite high!
We walked in to town this afternoon before returning to the Thermalrium. I made a study of the bathing hats which remain in favour here among bathers of a certain age...
The Herren (men) prefer a simple, close fitting, streamlined hat with a go faster stripe. Perhaps this was the very hat they wore in the 1936 Munich Olympics.
The Damen, predictably, have much greater variety:
i) The Shower Cap ? presumably borrowed from home
ii) The Ruffle ? usually bright primary colours
iii) Ribbed ? for your pleasure!?
iv) The Hydrangea ? large floral blooms
v) The Meringue ? White and fluffy
vi) Summer Meadow ? Festooned with small colourful flowers
vii) Toad ? from Mario World
I have noticed a disappointingly low % of damen co-ordinating hat and cossie..... tsk.... have they no sartorial elegance?
