Poor Stan
He had pretty much the same expression all day and you can kind of understand why. All the other bookies have got fancy electronic displays showing the runners and odds, and there's usually three of them - one for the money, one at the back managing the money and running the board and another one doing all the numbers. Stan's on his own with his crummy bits of paper and white board pens. So he's a bit slow with odds. And can't really chat when it's clear you don't know what you're doing and are just there for a bit of fun. But at least he's got a big brolly keeping the rain off.
Not the best day for the races but good fun nonetheless and it's nice to get out of the office for a bit of a treat at the company's expense (or is it the clients'. I suppose ultimately it's the clients' expense, which means it's ultimately the taxpayers. You lot. Thanks guys). Some winners and losers but as whole we went home £170 better off, with a good lunch, a few drinks and a good laugh. Can't ask for much more than that.
Cheer up Stan.
