Spleenwort

Today's the day ..................... for a wall garden

You really would wonder how this little fern can possibly manage to grow in this limestone wall. It looks very healthy but where does it find enough nutrients to keep it so green.

Both its scientific name Asplenium and its common name "spleenwort" are derived from an old belief that the fern was useful for curing ailments of the spleen - although I have to admit I'm not exactly sure what they might be?!
