Scalps.

I saw what I thought was a rather bizarre display when I visited the indoor market to buy some Cyprus spuds to make chips to accompany the gammon tonight. I had a wander upstairs to see if there was anything blippable. There was, and plenty on the car boot sale as well. Mrs. G, would say that because I was bald, I have a thing about hair and syrups. I just thought it looked odd. A lad I used to work with at the GPO, Ken Yates, was a grand bloke, but often financially embarassed. His wife only gave him £10 per week spending money, even if he had worked 7 days. They lived in a posh area and struggled with the mortgage. Yatty often had to scour the dustbins for empty pop bottles, to get the money back off the bottles, to enable him to scratch together enough for a latch lifter for Friday dinner(lunch) time.
Mrs Yatty, bought him a very expensive Crown Topper toupe, in the late 70's, it cost a real packet. He only wore it when going out, and that included the union Christmas do. We got 8 tokens for a pint or a short, and Yatty was the first into the bar. Being clever, he tried to vault over the barrier outside St. Augustine's club, slipped on the wet steel, hit his head on it which caused a profuse bleed. The Crown Topper slipped off his pate, and landed in a wet patch on the flags. An elderly lady entering cried out,"that blokes just scalped himself" and collapsed in a heap.It could only happen to Yatty. The injury, was superficial, and we stopped it with a bar towel. The Crown Topper was put into his pocket, and would come out just before he got back home. Yatty, of course refused a trip to the hospital, what, and miss 8 pints. He went on to win the Welsh don and the dominoes, and went home very well oiled, more money than when he set out,a little bloody, but I heard him whistling when he left. BTW, the elderly lady had a port & lemon, courtesy of the union sec, and as far as I know enjoyed the rest of her Christmas.
Adios.
