Books and cats for sale!
Actually the man you can see in the brown shirt in the distance doesn't sell cats, he just looks for homes for some of the many kittens born near his book stall, and allows the resident street cats to curl up in his books. This is one of the booksellers I mentioned that had moved out of a local square while it was renovated.
Azeris are very fond of their street cats. Lots of people feed them either near their home or carry biscuits in their bags to feed them in the street - I'm not the only one!! Our office guards used to feed salami to one local cat, but told me that he seemed to prefer the cat biscuits I brought. There's a resident cat at our local grilled chicken and kebab shop, and pet shops usually have several cats that come and go, helping themselves to the biscuits put out for them.
